Chris has been deeply involved in tracking and determining the location of and population of the Yellow Legged Hornet in the Savannah Area. GEORGIA BEEKEEPERS SPRING MEETING The club was was well represented at the conference in Macon on the 17th and Honey show with at one 1st place and one 2nd place. Speakers inluded Dr. Keith Delaplane from UGA and Dr. Jamies Ellis from UFL who both gave great presentations and updates on research and studies on keeping our bees. BEE UPDATE The temperatures are kicking the bees into action. I caught one small swarm for Carl Hagan in Bulloch County this past week. He has two colonies, one was a deadout and the other queenless with no brood. The were both full of new comb and had a lot of fresh looking honey. A lot of yellow pollen is being brought into our hives and activity has really picked up. If you are going to split your hives it is time to work on that. We will be going into our hives this week. Please remind everyone about the meeting this Thursday night and invite a guest or three. - MARCH Tasks Finish getting equipment cleaned and ready for the season. Check for Drones Check for Swarm Cells Check for mites while brood is low (only on warm days) Treat for mites Consider splitting hives Be prepared to see swarms and capture if you want FREEBEES! We do not meet in November and December to allow you family time at the holidays. You can meet fellow beekeepers, compare experiences, ask questions and be a part of the "hive." Just like in a beehive, it isn’t the work of the one, but the work of the many that make a successful place to call home.
